During the aieee counciling , we were asked to choose colleges as per the stream we like to prefer.actually,i had not so good marks and because of that rather than choosing many colleges i only choosed few colleges as i wish......unfortunately,the seats of the colleges i had choosed were already reserved and so, my name was not listed out.....     after that i joined sikkim government college, gangtok for doing b.sc..   it is a 3 years course n during this 3 years i have subject combination of maths,     physics ,     zoology ,      chemistry and  english.....  i would liked to thank dakshana foundation and the faculty associated with it,though i had not been selected in IIT  but because of 2 years in bangalore, i find myself doing good in this course........and further i wil give my best........

Here is my small suggestion box for you (future IITians)  :

You are now at the right place and at the right time to act smart towards your future. If neglected , have to pay for it.To avoid this, try as much as possible to have sufficient information regarding the selection of course/branch. Choose yourself what you want to be.

• Try to collect information on branches first from your faculty members as you will be with them for most of the time and I hope they can help you in this better than others.
• Ask any of the elders that you think are experienced in this field.
• Better contact with the seniors from IITs as they will be knowing the new trend in IITs.  Most of the time the stream you think better from your point of view will not be the best in IITs. Once you come to IIT you may wonder the order you see there!
• Keep your mind out of tension, as this may help you make better decisions.
• Do not run at the last moment to fill the choices (like me, since I filled just                  1 and half hour just before the deadline!), and with full of confusion.
• Fill as many choices as possible as there is enough space provided.  No need to save the space, save your Life!
• Prepare a list of your choices before-hand , don't try  to look for the  first time on the screen and start selecting
• I feel ,giving preference to the branches will be better than to IITs.But sometimes it really matters.So think on it.
• Even if you listen to thousands of your well wishers the final decision is yours! Keep that in mind.Go for the branches which provoke your interest and can bring an expert out of you rather than which are at the top in the market. Because many are tempted to do that, but remember  you are the one who is going to enjoy learning and not just bare it as you took.
• Many of my friends shared their suggestions  and some mistakes too, which I feel  are worth obeying.

One thing, as a senior, I can tell you that IIT is the place where you can have the real-life experiences packed            with full of opportunities "If you are ready to take them".   Everything is possible and present here.Do not miss any single chance of being here as an IITian.

LIFE  STYLE AT NIT-K

 Life is fantastic at NITK.We have a very good faculty for the book warms.We have a large library thar closes at mid night. Together with studies we have technical fest and cultural fest . Very often we enjoy at beach which is  not more than half a kilometer from our hostel unlike JNV  Bangalore Urban, here we get nothen food in the mess.We have about 32 Dakshana members who always guided us personally.On a whole enjoy NITK together with the study.

 MY DEPARTMENT ( MINNING ENGG.)-:

Very few  (2 or 3) IITs have Mining department that give a very good chance for mining graduates  of NITK for the placement. Mining is considered to be the most chill branch at NITK. With only 19 hour class per week. If u get a pointer above 6  in this department then it is almost sure that you will get a goverment job through COAL INDIA  and the salary  too is on an average is 5 to 6 lacs per year.

 About counselling : when my IIT JEE 2011 went bad i had then itself decided to go for a coaching and JEE the following year. IIT & AIEEE results were out and i was in the search of a coaching institute prepare again . i had got many option such as super 30 , super60, science contoe agra etc. i was so sure of doing preparation that i didn't even register for the counselling of AIEEE . later due to some financial & family problem i was told to join the class this year itself. i checked for counselling but was not allowed for counselling because i had not registered  for the first round of counselling , i got a chance to be considered for counselling at the spot round that was after five rounds of counselling got over. almost all the seats were filled except mining and mettalurgy of NIT-K. luckily i got mining at NIT-K and joined it .

Don't do  the mistake what i had done , i could have easily got computer science or any other standard branch, if only i had registered for the first round of counselling.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY( NIT-K)

NIT-K  ranks 8th in the list of engineering colleges , 6 of the IIT'S and BITS PILANI are ahead of NIT-K obviously it is the topmost in NIT'S  . it is unique in the sense , that it is the only institute with a private beach . the campus is of about 300acres . placements at NIT-K are good because it has limited branches and that too with learned faculty.

National Institute of Technology Karnataka is one amoung the ten best engineering colleges in India.It is situated near coastal area of dakshina karnataka.

The college has the 9 branch for the undergratuate course.bbranch being Electrical and Electronics,Electronics,Computer Science,Information Technology,Mechanical,Chemical,

Mining,Civil and Metallurgy having good faculty.The college conduct special coaching classes in the evening hours for those who are not able to understant in the regular classes.The college has been provided with an excellent library having wide range of books and journal.it also have digital library for easy access. Of late NITK has been in news for having the best placement in the country.With huse companies like Microsoft,Facebook,NTPC etc... with nice pay packages. The has decent hostel facilities with good security.The hostel mess provided good hygienic food

for all the hostellers.On the lighter side a hosteller can orderfrom the night canteen until midnight if they set board of mess food.The college has the beautiful huge and evergreen campus with prirate beach.It has lots of facilities like central computing centre,swimming pool,sports complex also it has four major technical clubs in college namily IEEE,CSI,ISTE etc... which conduct technical events and warkshops for bettement of technical knowledge amoung students time to time.They help students undertaking small projects and interships in various companies.Apart from this there are number of hobby clubs such as music club,Artist of forum,Photogrphy club etc... For improvment of students in cocurricular activities. From time to time several intertainment programes are also conducted in ehich students can showcase their talents. In the field of sports lot of encouragement is given for various like vollyball,basketball,swiming,tenis,cricket and athelitics events.

LIFE AT NITK

My college name is NITK.everything is so cool overhere. I am very proud to be an NITian.Days in NITK is really busy.Days usually break at 7:30.After what you have to do is pack up,clean up and wash up and begin a race with your professor.Do have to enter the class before your prof. can arrived.After that everything is cool and time passes so smoothly and when you that time is passing it's already lunch time and we have to keep in mind that to aboid queing up in mess you have to make good effort. after lunch again we have to do the same packing and dress with your prof. for afternoon classes. once you feel doozy the class time is over,come back to your respective hostels and have the tea and snack.after this all the time is your if you don't have assignment to submmit or test  the very next day you have many option left with the first option could be playing games like football,cricket etc. else st/sc special coaching class to repair your learning in the class room else some club activity else visit nearby city mangalore and enjoy KFC,pizzahat etc. or just window marketing in malls else slot in the swimming poll of NITK or in if you really want you can make a pair and enjoy with him\her at so called NITK beach enjoying sunset and the landbreeze the dinner is served at 7:30 pm though our college does not provide us good food but we navodayan can adjust everywhere.

After dinner you  can fixed your books or enjoy movies in 
your or yours friends leptop else you may get call from your senior if you join party at NITK. from 12 to 1:00 AM it'Ss your time   to lie on your bed and think and think about yourself . what gonn be my future but don't worry if you work  you will ending the four years b.Tech course with a placement of average 7-9 lakhs package per annum. or you will  simply think if you had done a little better you would had been something better performing really good in AIR will provide you very good scholarship . it was very important . but we should mind that we should we satisfied with what you have in hand and try to do something better  the next time when you strike . do it fast as you have to get up next morning, revising the same NIT-K routine.

helpful for your counseling, the crucial part after 2 years of hard
work result . . .
 Point to remember:
 1. Pay a Visit to IIT/JEE web-site frequently as all important guidance are regularly    upload/publish
  2. Take a print-out of all the details of instruction published in IIT/JEE website. This will help you!!
  3.Read the instruction carefully again and again. each word are important and helpful in filling-up of choices. Focus on BOLD LETTER given in the instruction.
  4. Any doubts arises while reading the instruction should be clear by DISCUSSION  with SENIORS, FRIENDS or SOMEONE WHO HAVE DONE ALL THESE BEFORE. . . .
   5. Last year 'opening and closing rank ' attached with the instruction is helpful in finding out of probability of getting admission in which IITs based on your ranking and course...This sheet is valuable in choosing of college and courses while filling up of your choices.
  6. Once you are aware of all the instructions, now decide your priority of course/subject and institute@IIT.
   7. In Choosing for college for particular subject, One-many Mapping could be applied:
       a) List all the courses in decreasing order of your choice.
       Eg: CS>Mech>Chemical
       b) List all high ranking IITs in decreasing order of your choice (Don’t include IITs  of low ranking)
       Eg: IIT-M>IIT-K>IIT-D


       Then, follow this combination:
     IIT-M(CS)>IIT-K(CS)>IIT-D(CS)>IIT-M(Mech)>IIT-K(Mech)………IIT-D(Chemical)

   8. In case your ranking is too low for all the good ranking IITs, then follow the same procedure (one-many Mapping) for Low ranking IITs. Note: Location, Infrastructure & Placement may account in time of final decision.
     Now, everything is ready for filling up of your choices.

DURING FILLING OF CHOICES:
       1. Keep yourselves relax and don’t be hurry in filling-up of choices. Read all the words written on the web-pages.
       2. Fill-up the choices.
       3. Choose maximum number of combination as you can. Based on your ranking, filling of combination should be done. “Last year opening and closing rank for each branch” will be helpful in formulating of combination.
       4. After completion of choosing/filling save it and take a print out of your choices.
       5. See your choices in the print-out paper and re-check it again.
       6. Once you are decided and convince by your choices, then only take final look-out and SUBMIT it.
       (Do not hurry in final submitting of your choices. Because you cannot edit or change your choices once you press SUBMIT button)    Make sure you have a good knowledge of every branches before you fill up the choices. Choose a branch of your interest as you will be in that department for your next 4 years, b-tech course. Every branch in IIT are equally good in their own field.

Congratulations to scholars for cracking JEE

Counselling would be the most important decision of your life. Your choice will determine your future. People get confuse when it come to choose a right subject and right college for their studies. So in my view you have mainly three ways to choose your branch, first you can choose it by your special interest in a particular subject. Secondly you may concern a senior and can clear your all doubts about the counselling. And at the last you may look into counselling brochure to find opening and closing ranks of all institutes. 
In most of the IITs the top branches are Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical choosing any of these subjects is a good option. In my case I chose CSE and it is top branch in iit kharagpur. The other subjects like Chemical, Civil engineering are also good options but people often prefer the top branches. 

Regarding the degrees there is not much difference in B tech and M tech dual degree. But I advise you to prefer Btech. cause if you choose to complete m tech. also you can switch to m tech dual degree in your 3rd year. there is also a provision in IITs that if you have scored 85% and above marks in 1st year you can change your department with some regulation. So you need to put your choices which you see closer to your rank and also satisfies your interests and future intentions.

Hi,my dear friends...

Don't be afraid of counselling. it is easy enough to do it. don't take it more seriously and don't take it lightly too.don't be too much worried about this and do follow the instructions as given in your information brochure.

so if you really fill depressed as i did during my counseling than read my message and learn something from it.don't repeat my mistake again and again because it may cost your valuable future. so i am now mentioning some difficulties i faced and the way not to repeat it once again.....

1.   if you get some rank in jee than  at first during counseling they will ask you to make a user account through which you can fill your choices. so don't be afraid as it could  be a problem of internet connection in your locality.and don't wait for your  friends to fill first after which you can follow them...i did the same mistake..so i did it in a hurry.there could be a chance of getting wrong in it but i was lucky...so as you get your rank visit your near by internet cafe and get some information by your own.along with that you can consult your friends and seniors if you are facing some problem.
2. after it is done they will be asking for registration for giving/filling choices for yourself for your desired branch and iit. you have to pay Rs1000 for it.the fee payment will be through dd(demand draft) or by your atm card or some internet banking facility(it will be mentioned there).in case of dd you can consult your near by bank to make a dd.or you can pay through atm card(visa or master card).if you get some problem you contact me or any of my friends.i also got so many problem with dd as there was no facility for payment by atm card..but at last i did it with help of one of my relative through atm card.
3. after your registration is over, there will be your choice filling.i was so much worried about all this.i tried to contact my seniors but i didn't had any one of there contact numbers. so couldn't choose my appropriate branch according to my rank(my rank was 15 in st) and got mechanical engineering in iit kharagpur. although it is not a bad branch but i could have gone to iit mumbai or iit kanpur taking electronics and communication(ec) department which is a better one than this as i didn't wanted computer science(cs-which is the most good branch).so you should choose the most appropriate branch for you and if you have any problem,you can always contact any of us.
4. the 2nd mistake i did was i only opted for three iit giving mechanical branch as my choice.i was lucky and had good rank...so i escaped from getting screwed. you should always give atleast 15 choices if you have a very good rank,30 if a better rank and more than 40 if you have very low rank...you should not leave a sign so that you will be canceled out.my two friends didn't get into iit because of these reasons.
5. so how will you fill your branch and iit choice??it's a real question......    

6. 1. first you have to choose your appropriate branch and iits by consulting with friends,seniors and us.
   2. than you have to sort list them from increasing to decreasing 
   3. after sorting, make sure everything is perfect
   4. than upload it and make it final

   so good luck future iitans....do your best during your counselling and don't loose the opportunity from being in IIT.

If you are going for the counseling , I’ll suggest that you better get in touch with a
senior of you .And while filling your counseling choices you better go for as many
choices as possible .


Check according to your rank in the Counseling Brochure in the previous year rank
wise allotments and ill suggest that you better fill all the choices that are allotted
for a better rank than yours First.


And one more important thing is that you better go for what you like first , if you don’t have any particular preferences than just go according to the last year rank
wise comparisons and your seniors advices.

The most important thing, better know about what options you are filling in the choice list .don’t just go for something random or something carelessly. Or else you are gonna regret that later, I do now. About my branch, the placements are quite good. The average placement

goes around 7 lakhs per annum .This year’s highest is 40 lakhs I guess. The IIT Kharagpur Mining department is the best in the country and it gets the best placements compared to other Mining Institutes in the country. And not to forget , 100% placements. Not all department's have that.

1. Get information through http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in/jee/ whether counselling is going online or offline and also get counselling brochure. Before performing any action first read carefully the counselling brochure.



2. At the time of counselling you can get opening and closing of braches according to rank. It will give you an idea about how selection procedure was done last year. 
3. You should put maximum number of choice. Don’t think that you could not be getting this or that branch. Fill the choices as according to your desire. At the time of locking your choices consider on priority of your choice. You should give maximum priority to the branch you like the most.



4. When you enter in the institute make sure that you know all building info and their location.



Once I had a engineering and drawing class. That time I did not know where the classes are going on. I thought that might be it may be in civil department because I come under civil engineering. So I go to civil department and stand in queue. When the professor came I came to know this class was for second year student. And that’s how I missed my first engineering and drawing class.

Im in mechanical engineering  department. Mechanical department is the largest department of IIT Kharagpur . This department provide 4 year btech, 5 year dual degree in mech engg. Almost 95% students get placed in campus placements . It is the oldest department in IIT KGP . It is best after Electronics and C.S deps.In mechanical you don't worry about hard work.It is peace full dept . 2011 opening and closing ranks are 848-1083 for gen. .my rank is sc276 So at the time of counselling i just filled mech at iit bombay,delhi,kanpur,kharagpur and other iities .and i got iit kharagpur. So at the time of your counselling you do some things given bellow

1. make contact to your seniors as many as possible at different iities

2.make list of your of your choices and give priority according to your counsult with teacher and seniors

3. fill as many as choices you can whatever is your rank

4 . counselling brochure's opening and closing rank of previous years

5. First choose only old iities

Hello Friend,


The most critical situation comes after clearing your IIT-JEE is when you have to choose your interested courses at the time of your counselling. Many students get confused and they do a lot of mistakes in selecting their subjects.


First of all you have to know which branch in which institute is good. Many people say many things, their views are different. It depends on you which branch you want to join. Only thinking of joining will not work, you need to have the required RANK for that branch. Presently the most demanding branch of all IIT’s is CS in IIT Bombay. Everyone wish to get that one, but it is not possible for all to get. Choose a branch that has a good record of placements. You can check it on net or may take help from any senior who are studying in IIT’s.

My best advice for you to choose your branch at the time of counselling is that you fill as many numbers as possible to fill, because by chance you may leave behind.


You will be given the last year closing ranks for each branch in each IIT’s either in the information brochure or on the institute website. According to that you can fill your options. But if you are interested in any other branches don’t think of not give it as an option, because you can’t say what may happen. For my rank (as seen from last year record), I was not getting CS in Bombay, Electrical in Bombay, and lot many branches but I filled them as my first choices. Currently my branch is Chemical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. I filled Chemical as my last choice, but that one.


For you I would say know about each IIT and its different branches in detail, how they are, which one is better etc. Think properly and fill the options. Don’t make any mistake. If you still have any confusion or want any help, you can contact me or any other senior who are presently studying in IIT’s. They will clarify your problems. Feel free to ask help. We are always there for you.


Don’t let go your 2 Years hard work just because of your one simple silly mistake. Later you will realize what you have done.

DEAR FRIENDS………..
Counselling is the most important and vital part after cracking the JEE because that is going to decide your entire career and hence the rest of your activities. Be very aware and serious about your counselling. But never get afraid or tensed about it. It’s a simple process. 
As soon as you get your JEE result, you should start searching for information about counselling and
about all IITs. Get known to all branches and courses that are available in a respective IIT. You can
get the information in online brochure or you will receive a hardcopy of it by post.

During your choice fill-up keep some general points in mind, such as:

1. YOUR MAJOR INTERESTED FIELDS : You should be in position to keep your interest in your field for 3 to 4 years, so be careful while filling choices because it often happens that when you come to IIT your interest get downhill by others opinions about your department or branch.
2. YOUR HOMESICKNESS : Your willingness to stay away from your home or to stay close to it also plays much greater role in your career life. So fill the choices accordingly.
3. BEST BRANCH : Keep your JEE rank in mind and accordingly make decision that which branch is best for your rank. At current some of best branches are COMPUTER SCIENCE , ELECTRONICS, ELECTRIAL AND MECHANICAL .
4. CHOICE FILLING SEQUINCE :Fill up all your most desired and best suited branches as the starting choices. And then the less desired and so on. And fill up maximum number of choices i.e. more than 100.

My department is ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. Personally I will advise you that if you are really interested and ready to study hard and are capable of tolerating any kind of study load then only choose electrical. Because electrical is a load creating subject as compared to other branches. It will
be better to choose mechanical branch if you are getting it at your desired IIT.

MESSAGE TO DAKSHANA SCHOLARS
Dear friends, after clearing jee/iseet you should fully focused on your counselling things. First of all you should go through the latest counselling brochure(different from information brochure) which you may not get due to postal delay(get it from iitkgp.ernet.in or some other websites).Choose the departments from different locations in which you are interested. For this, you should contact your seniors or refer to previous year allotment list according to rank. Do not lose hope after seeing some branch which you could not get according to last year’s list,no of seats may vary year to year and also no of students above your rank opting for that particular branch may vary.

Then comes choice filling procedure, for which you have to be extremely careful. First of all you should must have chose 100 to 150 departments in different locations, then if possible find someone who can help you about, filling the choices. Your first choice should be your best choice, then fill the choices in descending order of priority. Then make sure you lock your options after entering all(100-150) choices which you have chosen before. Then take a print out of the page in which you have filled the choices.

  Hi,  

 Before giving your choices have a look at the previous years seat allotments , you can access these things from the institute websites for e.g. jee.iitm.ac.in by doing this you get an idea regarding which is a better department and a better institute , and also the closing ranks of each department. To make it clear these closing ranks  are not going to be the same every year  it just gives you a rough idea where your rank may fall in. 

        While giving your choices give higher priority to the departments and the institute in which you would like to join (even if you think you are not going to get it according to the previous year statistics) . Try to give as many number of choices as possible.

IIT's are going to offer you  B.Tech, M.Tech(Dual Degree) , M.Sc(5 Years Integrated) , B.Arch though JEE

B.Tech/M.Tech - If you are interested in any B.Tech program and you think if you are not going get it in any of the institute in which you are interested, you may get the same program in a M.Tech (Dual Degree) course in which you will be getting a M.Tech Degree along with the B.tech Degree in 5 years. This Dual Degree is as much valuable as B.Tech Degree. 

M.Sc - If you are highly interested in any of the subjects like maths, chemistry, physics, economics. You can pursue these as 5 years integrated M.Sc course.

         

         

 DON'TS

Don't give preference to the institutes according to your regional  area , but give according to academics and other facilities available.Don't , keep any negative impressions regarding any branch unless you completely know about them, contact us if u want to know specifically about a particular branch.

Don't  opt for for a branch/institute just because most of your friends are opting, just stick to your own interest you may get better institute/branch than them.

        

          

         According to my point of view Computer Science,Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical are the top branches in IIT's and NIT's . During my counselling  I preferred the branches in the  same order as i mentioned above. The branch which I am damn sure of getting was my 12th option in my choice list. Even though knowing that I am not gong to get the first 11 options(which are better than the 12th one) I just tried my luck, the same  thing worked for my friend according to our previous years closing rankings he is not going to get ECE , he gave his option in the list, & he got it .Now he is doing his M.Tech(Dual) in  IIT Kharagpur . Give choices even after the option which you might  think you will get, its just for your own safety.

Message to Dakshana Scholars

Congratulations scholars for clearing the JEE.

The determined hard work of you in clearing the tricky examination will run into wastage if you fail to get a good branch according to your interests and future goals.The counseling part plays a vital role in the determination of your branch at the IIT’s. Many of you know little regarding the fate of different branches at IIT’s.The only thing you can do is to consult a known senior and put up your options during the counseling process. But this may not absolutely satisfy your plans and fetch you the desired branch. It needs more than that to get through counseling process.

When it comes to my case I secured an AIR-1084 in JEE-2010.As many others I too consulted some seniors to complete my counseling process.To my rank according to previous years counseling result I would have got all dual degree courses in kharagpur.But I don’t know much regarding the dual courses.So I preferred only btech courses. After entering IIT’s I came to know that there is not much difference in the two courses except the duration. Sometimes dual degree courses are better to opt for as you can get both your Btech and M.Tech degrees in 5 years. Many of them after getting into IIT’s switch to dual degree course in the same branch in their 3^rd year. This highlights the importance given to dual courses.So opting for a dual degree branch is not a bad choice.

Regarding the performance of the branches in IIT’s all the top four branches in i.e. computer science, electronics, electrical and mechanical are the top performers.Chosing any of this branch is a good option.The other branches including chemical, mining are among the widely chosen ones.If you want to be subject specific then opt for Integrated Msc. Courses like Msc. Mathematics, Msc.physics etc.You will also get a scholarship of Rs.80, 000 per year as scholarship if you chose Msc. Courses.IIT’s differ in the number of branches offered ,IIT kharagpur offers the most number of branches.You can chose any of this branches and get into the IIT’s.IIT’s offer a chance to those students who want to change their current branch and get a branch of their choice after entering IIT’s if your performance in 1^st year is above 85%.This process is known as DEP C(department change).Your interest in the branch you have opted is very important as it determines your performance in your stay at IIT’s.Your stay will be not be as smooth as you assume if you opt for a random branch.

So you need to put the choices which you see are closer to your rank and also satisfies you interests and future intentions. The counseling result may vary a little bit from year to year but that is very marginal. You can rely on the previous year counseling result to get a rough idea of the opening and closing ranks of different branches. After that arrange the choices from most interested to least preferred before filling your choices. You also should consider the fate and fame of the branches you are preferring for. This is important because you get disheartened after entering the college when you get to know that that your branch is not performing well. That’s why choosing a relevant branch is important. Finally its your faith and confidence in a particular branch of study will get you through the college life and opens up the roads for bright future.
