The determined hard work of you in clearing the tricky examination will run into wastage if you fail to get a good branch according to your interests and future goals.The counseling part plays a vital role in the determination of your branch at the IIT’s. Many of you know little regarding the fate of different branches at IIT’s.The only thing you can do is to consult a known senior and put up your options during the counseling process. But this may not absolutely satisfy your plans and fetch you the desired branch. It needs more than that to get through counseling process.
When it comes to my case I secured an AIR-1084 in JEE-2010.As many others I too consulted some seniors to complete my counseling process.To my rank according to previous years counseling result I would have got all dual degree courses in kharagpur.But I don’t know much regarding the dual courses.So I preferred only btech courses. After entering IIT’s I came to know that there is not much difference in the two courses except the duration. Sometimes dual degree courses are better to opt for as you can get both your Btech and M.Tech degrees in 5 years. Many of them after getting into IIT’s switch to dual degree course in the same branch in their 3rd year. This highlights the importance given to dual courses.So opting for a dual degree branch is not a bad choice.
Regarding the performance of the branches in IIT’s all the top four branches in i.e. computer science, electronics, electrical and mechanical are the top performers.Chosing any of this branch is a good option.The other branches including chemical, mining are among the widely chosen ones.If you want to be subject specific then opt for Integrated Msc. Courses like Msc. Mathematics, Msc.physics etc.You will also get a scholarship of Rs.80, 000 per year as scholarship if you chose Msc. Courses.IIT’s differ in the number of branches offered ,IIT kharagpur offers the most number of branches.You can chose any of this branches and get into the IIT’s.IIT’s offer a chance to those students who want to change their current branch and get a branch of their choice after entering IIT’s if your performance in 1st year is above 85%.This process is known as DEP C(department change).Your interest in the branch you have opted is very important as it determines your performance in your stay at IIT’s.Your stay will be not be as smooth as you assume if you opt for a random branch.
So you need to put the choices which you see are closer to your rank and also satisfies you interests and future intentions. The counseling result may vary a little bit from year to year but that is very marginal. You can rely on the previous year counseling result to get a rough idea of the opening and closing ranks of different branches. After that arrange the choices from most interested to least preferred before filling your choices. You also should consider the fate and fame of the branches you are preferring for. This is important because you get disheartened after entering the college when you get to know that that your branch is not performing well. That’s why choosing a relevant branch is important. Finally its your faith and confidence in a particular branch of study will get you through the college life and opens up the roads for bright future.
