Congratulations scholars for clearing the JEE.
The counselling part plays a vital role in the determination of your branch at the IIT’s. While doing your counselling mind the following things


1. Get information through http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in/jee/ whether counselling is going online or offline and also get counselling brochure. Before performing any action first read carefully the counselling brochure.



2. At the time of counselling you can get opening and closing of braches according to rank. It will give you an idea about how selection procedure was done last year. 
3. You should put maximum number of choice. Don’t think that you could not be getting this or that branch. Fill the choices as according to your desire. At the time of locking your choices consider on priority of your choice. You should give maximum priority to the branch you like the most.



4. When you enter in the institute make sure that you know all building info and their location.



Once I had a engineering and drawing class. That time I did not know where the classes are going on. I thought that might be it may be in civil department because I come under civil engineering. So I go to civil department and stand in queue. When the professor came I came to know this class was for second year student. And that’s how I missed my first engineering and drawing class.

Hi friends 

Im in mechanical engineering  department. Mechanical department is the largest department of IIT Kharagpur . This department provide 4 year btech, 5 year dual degree in mech engg. Almost 95% students get placed in campus placements . It is the oldest department in IIT KGP . It is best after Electronics and C.S deps.In mechanical you don't worry about hard work.It is peace full dept . 2011 opening and closing ranks are 848-1083 for gen. .my rank is sc276 So at the time of counselling i just filled mech at iit bombay,delhi,kanpur,kharagpur and other iities .and i got iit kharagpur. So at the time of your counselling you do some things given bellow

1. make contact to your seniors as many as possible at different iities

2.make list of your of your choices and give priority according to your counsult with teacher and seniors

3. fill as many as choices you can whatever is your rank

4 . counselling brochure's opening and closing rank of previous years

5. First choose only old iities

The most critical situation comes after clearing your IIT-JEE is when you have to choose your interested courses at the time of your counselling. Many students get confused and they do a lot of mistakes in selecting their subjects.


First of all you have to know which branch in which institute is good. Many people say many things, their views are different. It depends on you which branch you want to join. Only thinking of joining will not work, you need to have the required RANK for that branch. Presently the most demanding branch of all IIT’s is CS in IIT Bombay. Everyone wish to get that one, but it is not possible for all to get. Choose a branch that has a good record of placements. You can check it on net or may take help from any senior who are studying in IIT’s.

My best advice for you to choose your branch at the time of counselling is that you fill as many numbers as possible to fill, because by chance you may leave behind.


You will be given the last year closing ranks for each branch in each IIT’s either in the information brochure or on the institute website. According to that you can fill your options. But if you are interested in any other branches don’t think of not give it as an option, because you can’t say what may happen. For my rank (as seen from last year record), I was not getting CS in Bombay, Electrical in Bombay, and lot many branches but I filled them as my first choices. Currently my branch is Chemical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. I filled Chemical as my last choice, but that one.


For you I would say know about each IIT and its different branches in detail, how they are, which one is better etc. Think properly and fill the options. Don’t make any mistake. If you still have any confusion or want any help, you can contact me or any other senior who are presently studying in IIT’s. They will clarify your problems. Feel free to ask help. We are always there for you.


Don’t let go your 2 Years hard work just because of your one simple silly mistake. Later you will realize what you have done.

DEAR FRIENDS………..
Counselling is the most important and vital part after cracking the JEE because that is going to decide your entire career and hence the rest of your activities. Be very aware and serious about your counselling. But never get afraid or tensed about it. It’s a simple process. 
As soon as you get your JEE result, you should start searching for information about counselling and
about all IITs. Get known to all branches and courses that are available in a respective IIT. You can
get the information in online brochure or you will receive a hardcopy of it by post.

During your choice fill-up keep some general points in mind, such as:

1. YOUR MAJOR INTERESTED FIELDS : You should be in position to keep your interest in your field for 3 to 4 years, so be careful while filling choices because it often happens that when you come to IIT your interest get downhill by others opinions about your department or branch.
2. YOUR HOMESICKNESS : Your willingness to stay away from your home or to stay close to it also plays much greater role in your career life. So fill the choices accordingly.
3. BEST BRANCH : Keep your JEE rank in mind and accordingly make decision that which branch is best for your rank. At current some of best branches are COMPUTER SCIENCE , ELECTRONICS, ELECTRIAL AND MECHANICAL .
4. CHOICE FILLING SEQUINCE :Fill up all your most desired and best suited branches as the starting choices. And then the less desired and so on. And fill up maximum number of choices i.e. more than 100.

My department is ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. Personally I will advise you that if you are really interested and ready to study hard and are capable of tolerating any kind of study load then only choose electrical. Because electrical is a load creating subject as compared to other branches. It will
be better to choose mechanical branch if you are getting it at your desired IIT.

MOST IMPORTANT PART DURING YOUR COUNSELLING IS MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE IN CONTACT WITH YOUR SENIOR FELLOWS. YOU CAN CONTACT ANY ONE OF THEM AND CAN ASK FOR ANY KIND OF HELP OR CLARIFICATION ABOUT ANY GENUINE DOUBTS.

MESSAGE TO DAKSHANA SCHOLARS
Dear friends, after clearing jee/iseet you should fully focused on your counselling things. First of all you should go through the latest counselling brochure(different from information brochure) which you may not get due to postal delay(get it from iitkgp.ernet.in or some other websites).Choose the departments from different locations in which you are interested. For this, you should contact your seniors or refer to previous year allotment list according to rank. Do not lose hope after seeing some branch which you could not get according to last year’s list,no of seats may vary year to year and also no of students above your rank opting for that particular branch may vary.

Then comes choice filling procedure, for which you have to be extremely careful. First of all you should must have chose 100 to 150 departments in different locations, then if possible find someone who can help you about, filling the choices. Your first choice should be your best choice, then fill the choices in descending order of priority. Then make sure you lock your options after entering all(100-150) choices which you have chosen before. Then take a print out of the page in which you have filled the choices.

  Hi,  

 Before giving your choices have a look at the previous years seat allotments , you can access these things from the institute websites for e.g. jee.iitm.ac.in by doing this you get an idea regarding which is a better department and a better institute , and also the closing ranks of each department. To make it clear these closing ranks  are not going to be the same every year  it just gives you a rough idea where your rank may fall in. 

        While giving your choices give higher priority to the departments and the institute in which you would like to join (even if you think you are not going to get it according to the previous year statistics) . Try to give as many number of choices as possible.

IIT's are going to offer you  B.Tech, M.Tech(Dual Degree) , M.Sc(5 Years Integrated) , B.Arch though JEE

B.Tech/M.Tech - If you are interested in any B.Tech program and you think if you are not going get it in any of the institute in which you are interested, you may get the same program in a M.Tech (Dual Degree) course in which you will be getting a M.Tech Degree along with the B.tech Degree in 5 years. This Dual Degree is as much valuable as B.Tech Degree. 

M.Sc - If you are highly interested in any of the subjects like maths, chemistry, physics, economics. You can pursue these as 5 years integrated M.Sc course.

         

         

 DON'TS

Don't give preference to the institutes according to your regional  area , but give according to academics and other facilities available.Don't , keep any negative impressions regarding any branch unless you completely know about them, contact us if u want to know specifically about a particular branch.

Don't  opt for for a branch/institute just because most of your friends are opting, just stick to your own interest you may get better institute/branch than them.

        

          

         According to my point of view Computer Science,Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical are the top branches in IIT's and NIT's . During my counselling  I preferred the branches in the  same order as i mentioned above. The branch which I am damn sure of getting was my 12th option in my choice list. Even though knowing that I am not gong to get the first 11 options(which are better than the 12th one) I just tried my luck, the same  thing worked for my friend according to our previous years closing rankings he is not going to get ECE , he gave his option in the list, & he got it .Now he is doing his M.Tech(Dual) in  IIT Kharagpur . Give choices even after the option which you might  think you will get, its just for your own safety.
